California Forests Tote Bag
An informative look at four of the most common native trees found in California's forests.
About the Trees
Ponderosa Pine: Ponderosa Pines are extremely fire resistant and can survive even if all their needles have been burned off. These trees have clumps of long needles and are clad in bark that splits into large plates. Able to live over 600 years, Ponderosas can grow to be 130ft tall.
Coast Redwood: California’s best-known tree, Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world. The tallest reaches 380ft, 75ft above the Statue of Liberty. Alive for 3000 years (sempervirens means ever-living), these giants absorb water from the air, meaning they drink from the clouds.
Douglas Fir: Not a true fir, its genus name Pseudotsuga means "false hemlock". Douglas Firs are evergreen trees that regularly grow 300ft tall, 8ft in diameter, and live over 500 years. They were first utilzed by native peoples for building, basketry, and medicinal purposes.
Incense Cedar: Actually part of the cypress family, the Incense Cedar is misnamed because it has aromatic wood like true cedars. It reaches heights of 100 – 130ft and grows flattened splays of scale-like leaves. Pencils are traditionally made of Incense Cedar.
